Mallory Pugh became the youngest American soccer player to score in the Olympic Games when she put the U.S. ahead 2-1 on Tuesday against Colombia.
Pugh, an 18 years old from Highlands Ranch, started the game on the bench, but came in for Megan Rapinoe in the 33rd minute with the U.S., trailing 1-0.
In the 60th minute, with a score of 1-1, Pugh took a shot from inside the penalty area which was blocked by teammate Christen Press. Pugh gathered the ball, dribbled toward the penalty spot and buried a left-footed shot past the Colombian defense.
Moments later, Pugh appeared to have scored a second goal but was called offside. Colombia later tied the match, ending with 2-2.
Pugh, the 2015 Gatorade national player of the year, became the second-youngest U.S. women’s soccer player in history to compete in the Olympics at 18 years, 3 months and 5 days, the last week. Only Cindy Parlow was younger (18 years, 2 months, 13 days) in 1996.
