Caffeine, a type of stimulant, is one of the most commonly used substances around the world. Many people take it to increase their energy and alertness. However, a lot of individuals go over the recommended safe amount, which can cause caffeine overdose. It is usually safe to have up to 400 milligrams of caffeine in a day, but having too much can result in uncomfortable symptoms. Consistently consuming high amounts may even lead to serious health problems. To help you determine if you are consuming caffeine safely, here are some signs and symptoms of too much caffeine that you should pay attention to.

Signs and symptoms of caffeine overdose:

Trouble sleeping: One of the most common signs of too much caffeine is having trouble sleeping. If you struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep, it could be related to high caffeine consumption.

Feeling anxious or shaky: Too much caffeine can create feelings of anxiety, restlessness, or shakiness. Some people may also notice mood swings and trouble focusing.

Faster heartbeat: A quickened heartbeat, palpitations, and short-term increases in blood pressure can happen with high caffeine intake.

Stomach problems: Consuming too much caffeine may lead to digestive issues, such as an upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, and increased stomach acid, which can cause heartburn or acid reflux.

Headaches: Although caffeine can sometimes help relieve headaches, consuming too much can also cause them.

Dependence: If you find that you need more caffeine to feel the same effect or if you have withdrawal symptoms like tiredness and irritability when you don’t have caffeine, it might mean you are overusing it.

Dangers of drinking too much caffeine:

In high amounts, this can result in dehydration and possible imbalances in electrolytes.

Long-term dangers:

Weak bones: Regular heavy caffeine consumption may hinder the body's ability to absorb calcium and increase the calcium lost in urine. This can lower bone density and potentially raise the risk of osteoporosis, especially in women who have gone through menopause.

Mental Health: Consistently consuming too much caffeine is linked to anxiety disorders, which include ongoing feelings of nervousness and episodes of panic.

Dependence and tiredness: Overusing caffeine often creates a cycle of tiredness. People commonly consume caffeine to hide their sleep loss, which can lead to even more sleep disruption, creating a physical and mental reliance on caffeine to stay alert.

Drinking excessive amounts of caffeine can lead to immediate physical discomfort and long-term health issues. While most healthy adults can safely have up to 400 mg per day, going over this amount or consuming very strong forms can be risky. Pregnant individuals should limit their intake to no more than 200 mg each day.
