Marijuana festival at Cheesman Park has been called off

The marijuana festival, which was going to held at the Cheesman Park next month has been cancelled by the event organizers.

The two day Denver 420 Fest was scheduled to take place fro, April 20th, which is the unofficial “holiday” for marijuana enthusiasts, and was to feature musical events and a number of vendors.

The residents surrounding the Cheesman Park had expressed concerns about noise, traffic and possible drug use, though the event organizers stated that no public consumption of marijuana would be allowed.

The organizers posted a message on the event’s website saying that the event was canceled in light of “ridicules” requirements from the city.

“Due to the city of Denver placing extraordinary requirements on us that they do not place on anyone else (sic) events, we have to cancel,” according to the event’s website.

“Due to the last minute additions that were placed on us, we cannot meet the ridiculous requirements of the Denver city Parks and Denver PD.”

Officials of the Denver Parks and Recreation released a statement to clarify the requirement organizers had to meet in order to hold the event.

Denver Parks and Recreation spokesperson, Cyndi Karvaski said "The event organizer had been issued a conditional park permit based on an initial review of their application and was to submit the required fees and meet all permitting requirements by the deadline of 21 days prior to their event."

“Through the city’s evaluation of the proposed event, it was determined that additional safety measures would need to be taken in order for a permit to be issued," she added.

A separate event at the Civic Center Park is still scheduled to go on as planned.
