Safeway’s Denver bread plant will be closed on February 27. The move will eliminate 95 jobs. According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, the plant is being operated at 4500 Dahlia St. situated in northeast Denver since the 1970s.
The Supermarket Chain’s spokeswoman, Kris Staaf, informed that, they are switching bread production to third-party baker. She also confirmed the closure of the plant. She said that, "This was a difficult decision made after long and careful deliberation. We evaluated the volume of work and believe that moving production to a third party will allow us to run a more efficient operation." Operations and production of the other stores in the state would not be affected. They are also “encouraging workers to apply for other positions within our company.”
She said that, the third-party baker is unidentified. Neither she reveals its location, nor she discusses 125,000-square-foot building plans for the company. Jim Bolt, executive vice president at CBRE's Denver office said that, the facility is located in the south of Interstate 70 and nearby the Safeway distribution center and milk production plant. They are expecting a huge response from the buyers. He said, "There are historically low-vacancy rates in Denver, and values are at an all-time high. If this was going to go, this is the time to do it, the best time to put properties on the market.
